DAVID COHEN is art critic and contributing editor at the New York Sun, publisher of the online magazine, artcritical.com,
gallery director at the New York Studio School, and a freelance lecturer, moderator, curator and art historian.
Born in London and educated
at the University of Sussex and at the Courtauld Institute of Art, David
Cohen wrote for leading newspapers and magazines in England and around
the world before emigrating to the United States in 1999.

His is the author of Alex Katz Collages: A catalogue raisonné (Colby College Museum of Art, 2005), Jock McFadyen: A Book about a Painter (Lund Humphries, 2001) and Henry Moore in the Bagatelle Gardens, Paris (Lund Humphries/Overlook Press, 1993). He has also written substantial catalogue essays on a number of topics, including
Henry Moore's influence, national identity and British sculpture, Stanley William Hayter, C.R.W. Nevinson, the School of London painters, Lucian Freud's etchings, Judith Rothschild, and Markus Lüpertz.
His "Gallery Going" column at the New York Sun, where he has been Art Critic since May 2003, usually appears every Thursday and is posted at artcritical in the weeks that follow. His work has also appeared in Art in America, New York Times Book Review, Slate, Artnet, Burlington Magazine, Apollo, Modern Painters, RA Magazine, Print Quarterly, and other publications.
Exhibitions he has curated at the New York Studio School since 2001 include William Tucker: A Drawing Retrospective; Thomas Nozkowski: Drawings; WATERCOLOR (co-curated with Susan Shatter); American Cutout; Lois Dodd: Nudes in the Landscape; Alain Kirili; Rackstraw Downes: Drawing as Part of the Process; Martha Diamond: From Three Decades; Mernet Larsen: The Geometric Figure Paintings; Four Sculptors: Chris Duncan, Geoffrey Heyworth, Karlis Rekevics, Sally Tittmann; Frank Galuszka: Paintings; and An American Abroad: Sandra Fisher and her School of London Friends.
Exhibitions he has organized elsewhere include Alex Katz Collages at Colby College, Wateville, Maine (2005), The Tipping Point at Locks Gallery, Philadelphia (2002), and Between Gesture and Gylph: Paintings by David Brody and Drew Lowenstein at Makor Arts Center, New York (2000). Cohen also organizes the annual Morton Feldman concert at the Studio School.
Cohen moderates The Review Panel, the popular monthly forum at the National Academy Museum, and The Craft of Criticism, one-on-one dialogues with critics and art historians at the New York Studio School. Since 1999 his guests in these series have included Svetlana Alpers, Michael Brenson, Arthur Danto, Lance Esplund, Michael Fried, James Gardner, Dave Hickey, Ken Johnson, Hilton Kramer, Rosalind Krauss, Donald Kuspit, Mario Naves, Linda Nochlin, Jed Perl, Peter Plagens, Robert Rosenblum, Jerry Saltz, Irving Sandler, Peter Schjeldahl, Roberta Smith, Mark Stevens, Karen Wilkin and Alexi Worth. He has also conducted public dialogues with artists Anthony Caro, Jane Freilicher, Alex Katz, Alain Kirili, and Marisol.
David Cohen is editing a collection
of his Craft of Criticism interviews for publication, and is working on an Alain Kirili retrospective for IVAM, Valencia.
