					<description><![CDATA[Though John would be the last to acknowledge it, since he wrote an autobiography which strenuously attempted to excise from his narrative the many women in his life who supported him, John&#039;s first wife Betty Coplans (1920-1972) was tremendously important in supporting him for many years.During the formative period after the war when he went to art school and after as he worked to discover his metier before leaving for the USA Betty financially supported his endeavours with full time work much to the detriment of her own personal development.  His accomplishments in life were in no small part due to her hard work and devotion, and she should share some of the credit.]]></description>
