I just came from a colleague’s show uptown (John Zinsser at Graham Modern) and was struck by the striking signature elements in his new work of two other artists, Brice Marden and Jonathan Lasker. I didn’t discuss this with John at his opening, so I’m only guessing that they were on his mind. For myself, I can say I often borrow measurable bits from other artists and use them for my own consumption. Right now I’m obsessed anew with Charles Burchfield, weighing the pros and cons of lifting elements directly from the catalog vs. allowing his spirit to infuse my process and vocabulary. How about a Burchfield Bay Breeze for some studio mixology?
