It is ironic that Facebook is banned in China whereas, as you point out, it is large corporations which may well come to threaten freedom of expression in the West in the same way as any Chinese leviathan. Thank you for making clear what is at stake in the current scenario.

Thank you Jonathan for your important article....I wonder how active or
passive artists will be in signing the million-signature petition.
Although we are enjoying freedoms the Chinese do not have, they are being
curtailed as our American democracy, as you point out, becomes increasingly
controlled by huge corporations. To my dismay, I see complacency instead
of outrage many times. (For example, nudes or political paintings are
not easily accepted into galleries where I currently live...and suggestions
of a "back room" for those who want to view them are dismissed)

The situation for Ai Wei Wei as well as our subtle censorships is alalrming...and the lack of push back makes me think, "Wow, where is the fight?"

Let's see how many act to sign the petition on behalf of Ai Wei Wei!!
