Last January I looked at amazement at the new paintings of Will Barnet's at Alexandre Gallery and wondered where he still finds the inspiration and well just plain energy. These were well made well thought large paintings. I had known and admired couple of other painters that lived very long & painted well into their late years; Joseph Solman (age 95)& Irving Kriesberg(age 91). Their work too had youthful intensity and passion. I loved the notion of working as long as you want to, knowing you still had IT knowing you still WANTED to do it. So I decided to call my friend Lois Dodd whom I knew was friends with Will Barnet and I asked her if she could arrange for me to meet him. A couple of weeks later she called and said yes we could go to his apartment and meet him. I met him & Elena and they were very gracious. We talked about artists, teaching and why he still is inspired. I think he liked that I knew some of the same painters he knows. He was amazing; sharp, focused and polite. Very much in the moment. He showed me his current painting that he was working on in the studio (the studio btw is amazing. Like stepping into a painter's time machine). Will gave me 3-4 of his catalogs. It was a good day.
