Dear David,
Am a long time enthusiast of Artcritical.
I loved the Lois Dodd image that Artcritical posted.. The reprinted image of blue umber and white was a spare, urgent, economical poetic painting.. then I went to see the show and the rest of Dodd’s pictures were a disappointment. Fairfield Porter style platt American images.. Even Alex Katz and California period Hockney who was infected with this dry decal reality barely get away with it.

I lament the loss of these paintings; as well, equally (if not more so), the missed opportunity for those who would have experienced the serendipitous impact of these works. I can bear witness to the mood that emanated from the space of the narrative outwards: inviting and indeterminate. One mingled in these scenes with the way the paintings' borders faded and encroached further out kind of detached from the literal enclosure of setting. Joa has a lot of work behind (that went into) these canvases--she'll re-gather the strains towards new motifs of beautiful appropriation.
