I just saw the show today at the Studio School. Steinberg's portrait drawings so impressed me with their delicate rendering and his expertise in capturing the gesture and the mood of the sitter with amazing economy that I am flabbergasted that the articles I have read on him on the web hardly mention his talent as an aritist in his own right. I do understand that his stature as an art historian and art critic is so huge that it easily overshadows his own artistic output, but it is unjust not only to him but to ourselves to ignore valuing his artworks, and this show alone makes you admire this side of his accomplishments.
