Diebenkorn used the Golden Section in his abstracts as well as figure paintings- so he was not an Abstract Expressionist like many of his American contemporaries/ nor was Motherwell, for that same reason.

In reply to <a href="https://artcritical.com/2015/05/04/paul-carey-kent-richard-diebenkorn/#comment-353799">David Boehm</a>.

I was referring to a state of mind rather than an actual place. It may be that RD's work doesn't travel well. It's very much of specific sun drenched places.
I've seen what I believe is a version of the exhibition in San Francisco where it was well received. I do agree with one aspect of your criticism; the hanging of the show was overwhelming at times. There was simply too much being shown. Too many objects and too many periods.
I saw a better show of his work about five years ago at the Fort Worth Museum of Contemporary Art. It focussed entirely on the Ocean Park Series. Paintings, drawings and collages that trace the evolution of his thinking.
My tone was a little snippy but I did feel that some of the artists comments were a little art schoolish. Sorry if they offended.

One main point made is that the paintings are hung in an un-fun way to close together and seen under artificial light. So a sunny place was not an option. Have you seen the exhibition? Better to give your own opinion of the work and exhibition than detract from it with assumptious and reactionary view. Very un Diebenkorn of you.

This collection of artist/critics sound like they're stuck in MFA purgatory where one dare not have too much fun. Spend some time in a sunny place and these paintings will speak a little more forcefully.
