This course offers an entirely hands-on, practical approach to the research, writing and editing of journalistic art criticism. The student must be willing to immerse him or herself in regular gallery-going, background reading of exhibitions reviewed, comparative reading of contemporary journalistic criticism, and short deadline writing assignments. There will be a mix of commissioned and elective topics, always of current shows in New York, with a strong emphasis on lively, concise, descriptive evaluation. Formats adhered to will include the single paragraph “blurbs” in the New Yorker’s “Goings on About Town” section and the “back of book” three to four paragraph reviews of art magazines such as Art in America, Artforum and Art News.
