artcritical‘s holiday season party for writers and editors, speakers on The Review Panel, advertisers and friends was graciously hosted this year by painters Sean Scully and Liliane Tomasko in their Chelsea studio. In what has become something of an artcritical tradition some of our regular panelists and writers read from a classic text, this year an excerpt from part one of Oscar Wilde’s dialogue, The Critic as Artist.

Maybe the Jeff Koons portrait of Louis XIV triggers the association, but Labor Day always reminds me of the Sun King: “après moi, le deluge.” We are certainly in the thick of back-to-school excitement in New York City.  The need for critical clarity and a roadmap are all the more acute. So, welcome to the new season from artcritical.com

With artist duo Allora & Calzadilla at Barbara Gladstone getting off to a singing start last weekend (literally, enlisting the service of boy choristers) all four shows selected for the season premiere of The Review Panel are now open for inspection. Newcomers to the program, Alexander Nagel and Dorothy Spears join veteran Review Panelist Rob Storr and myself September 26 at the National Academy Museum for an evening of critical debate.

The other shows under consideration are Angela Dufresne at Monya Rowe, Marcel Dzama at David Zwirner and Justine Kurland at Mitchell-Innes & Nash. Can you believe it’s the tenth year of The Review Panel? It seems like no time has passed since Jerry Saltz and Ken Johnson locked horns that October night in 2004, with Walter Robinson and Alexi Worth heckling from the back row that we weren’t doing our job properly. The Review Panel now seems like an institution. The event also enters its fourth annual season in Philadelphia, at the Pennsylvania Academy, next month. Details of all the dates, speakers and venues are at artcritical with links to a decade of podcasts.

Our other big news at artcritical is that we have a new Associate Editor: Noah Dillon. Noah, who is also an artist, is a graduate of the Art Criticism and Writing MFA program at SVA, and both he and that program’s director, David Levi Strauss, will appear on The Review Panel next Spring. Noah’s critical acumen and intellectual ambition have already made themselves felt in our pages over the summer. He replaces our first Associate Editor, Nora Griffin, who is now a contributing editor. To get a flavor of his mind, check out his contribution to BOODMARKED, the series where writers and artists show us the scope of their online reading.

artcritical.com and the hosts of The Review Panel and The Review Panel Philadelphia – the National Academy Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, respectively – have announced speakers and dates for 2013 and 2014.  The panel discussion series, founded and moderated by David Cohen, enters its ninth year in New York and its second in Philadelphia.

At each event, four critics join Cohen to discuss current exhibitions the audience has had the chance to see ahead of time.  The October 4 line-up at the National Academy sees the return of three past participants in the series: critic and NYU professor Ara Merjian, New York Times co-chief critic and Review Panel regular Roberta Smith and painter and writer Stephen Westfall.  They join Cohen to review shows of David Adamo, Anna Betbeze, Matthew Day Jackson and Nan Swid.

Matthew Day Jackson’s show, titled “Something Ancient, Something New, Something Stolen, Something Blue”, opened Thursday night (September 6) at Hauser & Wirth’s Chelsea space, 511 West 18th Street.  David Adamo is the subject of two shows under review: a solo at Untitled, 30 Orchard Street, opening tomorrow (September 8) and a two-person show with legendary outsider artist James Castle, opening tonight at Peter Freeman, Inc., 140 Grand Street.  Also opening tonight in Soho is Anna Betbeze at Kate Werbel, 83 Vandam Street.  The fourth artist, Nan Swid, opens at Margaret Thatcher Projects, 539 West 23rd Street, September 19.

The Philadelphia season launches October 16 with panelists Tom Csaszar, Donald Kuspit and Edith Newhall.  The exhibitions under review will be confirmed presently.

The New York series sees a number of new participants later this year, amongst them the painter and critic Dennis Kardon, whose began writing for artcritical earlier this year; Hrag Vartanian, Editor-in-Chief at the blogzine, Hyperallergic; painter and critic Drew Lowenstein, a longstanding contributor to artcritical; Joseph Wolin, whose writings are familiar to readers of Time Out New York and artforum.com; and veteran critic and curator Saul Ostrow.  In Philadelphia Cohen in joined by locally-based commentators, including Inquirer critic Edith Newhall, returning to the series for a second appearance, along with past contributors to the New York series, who this season include Donald Kuspit, Ariella Budick and Hilarie Sheets.

Bronson appears on the panel for the first time while Berwick and Plagens are “repeat offenders.”  Other confirmed guests for the 2011/12 season include Patricia Milder, David Brody, Karen Gover, Ken Johnson, Michèle Cone, Ana Finel Honigman, Anthony Haden-Guest, Christina Kee, Franklin Einspruch, Faye Hirsch, Bill Berkson, Karen Wilkin, Lance Esplund, Maddie Phinney and Barry Schwabsky.

The Review Panel conducted much of its 2010/11 season in an otherwise shuttered Huntington Mansion as the headquarters of the National Academy underwent extensive renovations.  The building is scheduled to reopen to the public in September 2011 with a series of festivities including a retrospective of Will Barnet, the artist, who recently turned 100.

The dates of the panel in the 2011/12 season will be  September 30, October 28, November 18, January 27, February 24, March 30, and April 27.  Cohen will moderate each evening, as he has all panels since the inception of the program in October 2004 when the guests were Ken Johnson, Maureen Mullarkey and Jerry Saltz.
