The Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation Opens Its Doors

The weekend of September 15/16 sees the official opening of the restored former residence of Milton Resnick as the home of the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation. This historic synagogue on Manhattan’s Lower East Side has in fact been open, in preview mode, since July with an inaugural show of Resnick’s painting from 1937 to 1987. The building restoration, overseen by Ryall Sheridan Architects, was made possible by the sale of Passlof’s nearby studio-home, coincidentally another former synagogue. Passlof will be the subject of the Foundation’s second exhibition, in 2019. To welcome the Foundation to New York’s cultural life, artcritical offers this selection from our archives of coverage of Resnick and Passlof over the years.

Nicole Eisenman Double-Bill: Reviews of Her Exhibitions at the New Museum and Anton Kern

As if in celebration of Pride Weekend, artcritical fetes the art world’s newfound favorite queer painter Nicole Eisenman. It so happens Eisenman was one of the first artists featured at artcritical, back in 2001 when David Cohen reviewed that year’s invitational at the American Academy of Arts and Letters and discussed a painting by Eisenman in some detail. Our pride in the artist’s achievements runs deep.

Robert Gober Special: Dennis Kardon, Steve Locke and Lee Ann Norman

artcritical presents three writers’ responses to the exhibition, “Robert Gober: The Heart is not a Metaphor,” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, which runs from October 4, 2014 to January 18, 2015. Lee Ann Norman and Dennis Kardon are regular correspondents at artcritical. Steve Locke, the Boston-based artist, is a guest contributor to this special series. In her review of the concurrent MoMA exhibition of Christopher Williams, Amelia Rina (see links below) offers an extensive comparison of that show with Gober’s. The artist has been the subject of earlier reviews at artcritical: a show at Matthew Marks Gallery was reviewed by David Cohen in 2005, and the same show was discussed at The Review Panel that year, where Cohen’s guests were Robert Storr, Gregory Volk and Karen Wilkin.
