David Zwirner Gallery has launched an online portal, “Platform,” that showcases vital contemporary artists at leading independent galleries. The current crop are available online through August 15 and includes four works from Aneta Bartos: Family Portraits. Here is David Cohen’s featured listing from these pages in 2016 of same body of work originally seen at Postmasters which continues to represent the artist: “Photographer Aneta Bartos presents a poignant, gently absurd and mildly disconcerting series of self-portraits with her body builder father, Zbigniew, in the pastoral setting of their native Poland. These images build on an earlier series, Dad, that posed Zbigniew solo on farmland surrounding his home. Here, th father’s musculature is captured in its fading glory and contrasted with the waif-like, ethereal figure of the daughter. In some instances, she too dons swimwear, while in others traditional peasant garb. There is a comparable back and forth, from one image to the next, between insouciance and flirtation, black and white and evocatively dated, possibly even ghostly color, and between deliberately staged and casually candid composition.”
