Featured item from THE LIST: Lin Tianmiao at Galerie Lelong

Women were thin on the ground amongst the first generation of contemporary Chinese artists who made their mark internationally post-1989. One stand out figure is Lin Tianmiao, the feminist nature of whose projects accentuates, without of course compensating for, this lonely status. Over the years she has gathered and made consistently stunning and often diverse visual use of a global lexicon of words about women. Even the predictably misogynist majority of these terms have been put to affirmative, celebratory use. Protuding Patterns, a work from 2014, carpets Lelong with word-based fabric pieces that invite physical response and interaction from viewers. How often are we able literally to make ourselves comfortable on prejudice and cliché? DAVID COHEN
