Featured from THE LIST: Alberto Giacometti, Herbert Matter, Matthew Monahan, Jonathan Silver at Nicole Klagsbrun

As befits the  fragmented and elongated limbs abounding here, whether sculpted, drawn or photographed, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery’s exhibition, Alberto Giacometti, Herbert Matter, Matthew Monahan, Jonathan Silver, drawing to a close this week, is – curatorially-speaking – something of an “exquisite corpse,” one inclusion having led to another. A group of anxious spindly drawings by late sculptor Jonathan Silver hang with photographs by his friend and mentor Herbert Matter, husband of New York Studio School founder Mercedes Matter, that capture Giacometti’s sculptures in eerily surreal solarization. The fourth presence is a younger, living sculptor, Matthew Monahan, whose sliced and reconfigured caryatids are a curious foil to the obsessively modeled forms of the absent-present Giacometti, unless one thinks of the Swiss master during his brief phase as a Surrealist, with his Woman with her Throat Cut in polished bronze. There will be a closing reception March 7, 5-7PM, as part of NADA’s New York Gallery open. DAVID COHEN
