ARTCRITICAL PICK – BUSHWICK OPEN STUDIOS SPECIAL: Michelle Jaffé’s Wappen Field

Wappen Field is a sculpture and sound installation comprised of 12 chrome plated steel helmets resembling face guards. Running through the real time audio synthesizer software SuperCollider, each helmet’s dedicated speaker animates the room with vocals and extended voice techniques created for this work by composer/vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb.  Last shown in 2011 at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts,  Grand Rapids, Michigan, Michelle Jaffé’s piece has been reassembled in the artist’s studio for two festivals this month— it is part of Bushwick Open Studios this weekend (June 2/3) and Queens Art Express from June 14 to 17.  Wappen Field has also been selected for Momentum: Women/Art/Technology at Rutgers University next summer.
